I was visiting my father-in-law in his temporary nursing home. 3 of his sisters came to visit also. Now these sweet old ladies were all former nuns (they quit their order in order to take care of their ailing mother sometime back). One of the nuns (as we still call them) starts talking about their life growing up on the farm in the UP of Michigan. Her mother told her one day to chase down this disabled chicken so they could have it for dinner. She gave her the cleaver to cut it's head off. Once she caught the chicken she couldn't bring herself to chop off it's head. Instead she dangled the chicken head first into the pig pen AND THEY ATE IT'S HEAD OFF! She then used the cleaver to clean up the neck a bit and took it home for her mother to cook.
One day her mother ordered the kids to weed out some of the wild cats around the farm. Each kid was supposed to kill one. She couldn't bear the idea of seeing a cat drown so she tied a rock to a cat and dropped it into the cows watering trough and ran away. She came back later to bury the cat.
I told her that no wonder she became a nun, she had a lot of repenting to do!
